When German citizens Tom and Sindy first contacted me about officiating their elopement on the Mornington Peninsula, I underestimated just how emotional and moving this occasion would be!
After working together over Skype and WhatsApp, I learned of their love story, their reasons for wanting to elope in Australia and the sentimentality behind the chosen location. At this point I was already well and truly invested in Tom and Sindy, their secret, and their day. I was so excited to help them realise their dream.
Like many of the elopement couples I’ve officiated for in the past, Tom and Sindy aren’t the ‘centre of attention’ type, nor could they envisage the large ‘traditional’ style wedding back home in Germany. As a result, they made a joint decision to run away to Australia to make things official – returning to the very place they lived in for six months, the very place that truly cemented their love for each other during their dating days.
They asked their old work bosses from Australia (who happened to still be great friends) to come and officially witness the occasion, and together with their 9 month old son Theo, the 6 of us stepped onto the sands at Rye to create a little magic.
Tom and Sindy’s beach ceremony was real, honest, deep, thought-provoking and so powerful. Following the mandatory legals, the German lovers held hands and spoke their personal vows to one another. Despite not understanding one single word of the beautiful foreign language that was coming from their mouths, I didn’t need to comprehend it, in order to feel it.
The love and adoration that oozed through their body language, together with the tears rolling down their cheeks truly tugged on the heartstrings of the privileged few there in attendance. It’s safe to say it was a precious moment in time we will all remember.
Thankfully, the very talented Lifestyle Photographer Danielle Dobson was on hand to photograph the occasion and did an exceptional job in the natural light of capturing and showcasing the raw emotion on the beach that day. Have a look for yourself below!
But first, Tom and Sindy, I thank you for the absolute honour that it was being a part of your wedding. I’m so happy that your friends and family back home have since shared in the news of your secret nuptials and applaud you for doing it your way.
Personally, I shall remember your day fondly forever, and for this I thank you.
